The eCommerce/Digital Architect will provide technical direction, thought leadership, and hands-on support for Papa John’s digital products, enabling Papa John’s to lead the industry in exploring, creating, and supporting highest-quality, "customer first" experiences in various digital channels. This role is part of a team accountable for the site reliability (SR), high availability (HA), disaster recovery (DR), operational level agreements (OLA), service level agreements (SLA) and the 9’s of availability for our digital assets. Resiliency at Papa John’s encompasses technical attributes like stability, scalability, adaptability, re-usability, high availability, and performance – which enable our customer’s experience of always on, easy, accurate, and fast.

Specifically, the focus for this role will be to drive engineering practices that solve for latency tolerance, load tolerance, fault tolerance and data inconsistency tolerance. One of the main goals is to have near zero downtime for our customers. This role is responsible for pushing the digital performance and stability agenda. A successful candidate will also ensure that all upgrades and patches move through the various environments with confident Resiliency Testing coverage. Providing architecture guidance, and monitoring configurations across Data Centers and between tiers will also help to ensure adaptability and scalability.


  • Assist other architects and engineers in executing multiple forms of performance testing to achieve SR and HA for the many applications and services that are created by the product teams.
  • Organize HA failover testing strategies for the app, service, and data layers in production and pre-production
  • Organize periodic data refreshes and ensure minimal downtime
  • Work hand-in-hand with development teams (onsite and offsite) to ensure that solution design and solution implementation align and evolve together, using an agile mindset
  • Provide technical leadership and hands-on assistance to various roles on the extended team, driving team toward practices aligned with DevOps principles
  • Identify and research disruptive technologies (especially those that improve resiliency)
  • Participate in key process and deliverable improvements in Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery
  • Utilize Service Virtualization techniques for integration and latency testing
  • Provide thought leadership to help advance the resiliency of Papa John’s Infrastructure
  • Participate in collaborative team planning processes (estimating, prioritizing, etc.), and identify significant project milestones and risks
  • Provide stewardship for the application life-cycle, e.g. manage technical debt, influence the feature road-map, highlight innovation opportunities, and ensure candidate solutions are secure, resilient, and supportable
  • Prescribe appropriate types and levels of architecture review, code review, testing, documentation, monitoring, and metrics to ensure the ongoing Digital Health and production support of our platforms
  • Lead team through high-impact operational incidents and ensure root cause-oriented improvements are implemented
  • Enable continued improvement in key areas, e.g. Emerging Digital Channels, Industry Partnerships, Edge APIs, Bulk Integration, Quality Automation, Release Automation, Application Performance Management, Reference Architecture, Solution Architecture, Technology Adoption, Service Level Management, Resiliency, and Analytics



  • Professional, technical, interpersonal, and organizational skills commensurate with the responsibilities outlined
  • Significant experience in continuous integration, continuous delivery, continuous testing, and other DevOps-related tools and practices
  • Significant troubleshooting skills of complex problems in the areas of Application, Operating System, Networking, and Security
  • Significant experience with supporting multi-tiered applications, web and native client-apps, integration and database
  • Significant experience in Enterprise Integration patterns and platforms for message queuing, brokering, publish/subscribe, etc.
  • Significant experience in patterns and platforms for performance optimization (e.g. CDN, distributed cache, in-memory grid, etc.)
  • Hands-on with Java, Spring, HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, REST, SOAP, Linux
  • Experience in APM, UEM, and other tools for IT and user experience analytics
  • Experience with network intermediaries (load balancers, firewalls, security devices, etc.)
  • Experience in industry best practices and patterns for Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS)
  • Experience in industry best practices and patterns for data management at scale (relational and non-relational)
  • Experience in creating digital technology strategies and/or reference architectures
  • Excellent oral, written, and visual communication skills, including data visualization and diagramming


  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Technology, or Information Systems
  • 2+ years relevant work experience
