Sr Director Total Rewards



Reporting to the Chief People and Diversity Officer, the Senior Director of Total Rewards will be responsible for the strategic and operational leadership in compensation and benefits strategy and philosophy, processes, policies, program design, implementation and administration. This role will provide the strategic direction and execution for compensation, rewards, and benefits across the company and will create and manage global and executive compensation and benefits infrastructure to support the attraction, retention and motivation of Papa John's team members worldwide; develop and continuously improve incentive and bonus plan design(s); lead and manage the design and administration of all benefits and wellness programs; ensure compensation and benefits are aligned with Papa John's corporate strategic objectives and culture. 



  • Lead Total Rewards function to effectively design, implement and manage Papa John's compensation strategy, philosophy, programs, policies and initiatives to position the company to attract and retain top talent
  • Design and implement executive and non-executive specific compensation plans to include competitive short and long term incentive plans for executives, senior leaders, managers and colleagues, as appropriate
  • Provide expertise and adapt compensation design/approach to align with market trends, business strategy, and Papa John's culture
  • Manage all activity related to published compensation surveys throughout the year and audit survey output, market trends and competitive pay positions to ensure Papa John's salary plans meet overall company goals and objectives
  • Partner with HRBPs to develop, evaluate, and align individual positions and job levels to Papa John's career framework and compensation structure, in order to provide a clear path to succession
  • Ensure Papa John's compensation plans comply with legal and other regulations and manage processes and controls to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies
  • Partner with finance and legal counsel on SEC-related matters related to Executive compensation, including proxy development, annual Compensation, Discussion, and Analysis, and Board preparation and delivery of materials for Compensation Committee meetings
  • Oversight of all investment or retirement equity administration, including Papa John's 401K and NQDC plans, work closely with our legal and finance teams to ensure compliance
  • Partner with Finance on equity administration, grant documentation, reporting and transaction processing, and stock issuances for long term incentives
  • Reconcile invoices related to compensation programs and proactively manage relevant vendors, auditors, and consultant contracts


  • Lead, implement and administer all health and welfare benefit programs and initiatives ensuring competitive, sustainable, cost-effective plans and programs for Papa John's
  • Establish and manage compensation and benefit related budget, prepare accruals and provide audit support as necessary. Work closely with finance to ensure adequate levels of coverage remain in the health care reserve quarterly
  • Preparation of internal and external reports related to benefits and wellness plans
  • Lead the annual open enrollment process for Papa John's and its eligible subsidiaries. Working with vendors to ensure a smooth process for all team members
  • Reconcile invoices related to benefit programs and proactively manage relevant vendors, auditors, and consultant relationships and related contracts
  • Ensure ongoing analysis and evaluation of services, coverage, and options available through insurance and investment companies to ensure programs best meet the needs of the organization
  • Prepare and review annual NDT and 5500 filings and monitor plans for continued compliance.
  • Manage, coach and develop staff in both compensation and benefit groups to establish priorities, delegate responsibilities, identify resources, and ensure high quality and timely work product and execution of good customer service to team members
  • Ensure compliance with all state and federal regulations including but not limited to the Affordable Care Act/Health Care Reform, ERISA, HIPPA, FMLA, GINA, IRS, DOL, HHS, etc.



  • Proficient personal computer skills i.e. Word, Excel, Office 365, Internet, PeopleSoft, or similar software package/HRIS system required. Must be able to create and manipulate excel spreadsheets
  • Extensive executive compensation knowledge and experience, including plan design, administration, and industry best-practices.
  • Thorough knowledge of compensation theory and practices as well as relevant federal, state and local laws
  • Must have experience and working knowledge of compensation and benefit survey systems and processes
  • Experience with equity administration platforms
  • Experience preparing material and presenting to the Board of Directors and Compensation Committee
  • Strong presentation and facilitation skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required


  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Human Resources, or other related discipline required
  • Experience preparing and presenting material to a public company's Board of Directors and Board's Compensation Committee.
  • Ten or more years progressive Benefits and Compensation experience required
  • Five years of managing or developing executive compensation programs.
  • Five or more years management experience required
  • Professional certification(s) such as Certified Compensation Professional (CCP), Certified Benefits Professional (CBP), Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS) or HR Certification (PHR or SPHR) desired
